Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from T20I cricket after India’s victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados. Following suit, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also retired from T20Is, signaling a transition phase for Indian cricket. Despite this, all three players remain committed to ODI and Test formats. BCCI secretary Jay Shah hinted that veterans like Virat and Rohit will continue to be part of the Indian squad for the Champions Trophy 2025.
“The transition has begun with the retirement of three greats,” Shah stated, referring to Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja.
“Our goal is to win the World Test Championship final and Champions Trophy with a similar squad. The senior players will be retained,” Shah added.
Following Rohit Sharma’s retirement, Hardik Pandya is considered a potential candidate to lead the Indian T20I team. Having captained the Indian side in T20Is in 2023, Pandya’s leadership skills are well-regarded.
“The selectors will decide the captaincy. Hardik’s form was questioned, but he proved himself with their trust in him,” Shah mentioned.
After India’s T20 World Cup triumph, the BCCI announced a prize money of 125 crores for the team. This victory also ended an 11-year ICC trophy drought for India.
