During the T20 World Cup 2024, Group C match between West Indies and Afghanistan, several records were broken on Tuesday. West Indies, batting first, posted 218/5 in 20 overs with Nicholas Pooran scoring a stunning 98 off 53 balls, setting the highest total in the ongoing T20 World Cup. The highlight of the innings was Pooran joining the elite list of batters by smashing 36 runs in an over in a World Cup match.
Pooran achieved this feat in the fourth over, showcasing his talent against Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai.
In that over, Pooran smashed three sixes and three boundaries, and even capitalized on a no-ball from Omarzai to score another boundary, adding up to 36 runs. This marked the second instance in 2024 where 36 runs were scored in an over against Afghanistan, following the Indian duo of Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh earlier in the year.
Additionally, West Indies set a new record for the highest powerplay score in T20 World Cup history, scoring 92 runs in the first six overs, surpassing the previous record of 91 runs. England holds the third spot with 89 runs against South Africa in 2016 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
In terms of overall statistics, this powerplay score ranked fourth in T20Is history, with the highest being 102/0 by South Africa against West Indies in 2023.
Pooran also claimed the highest individual score in the ongoing T20 World Cup, with his 98 off 53 balls helping West Indies reach a formidable total of 218 runs before the Super Eight phase. This surpassed the previous record of 94 not out held by Aaron Jones of the United States against Canada.
