After a meeting with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi in Lahore, the final details of the appointment are being ironed out. The role is initially set to be a consultant to the chairman on cricket matters, similar to the position held by Robert Key at the ECB. However, it may evolve into a more permanent title in the future.
Naqvi is eager to have a former player handle all cricket-related decisions, allowing him to focus on other responsibilities as Pakistan’s Interior Minister. The board has been without a CEO since Wasim Khan departed during Ramiz Raja’s tenure as chairman.
The timing of Waqar’s potential appointment is crucial as Pakistan’s men’s team gears up for a busy season with matches against Bangladesh, England, South Africa, and the West Indies, along with other tournaments and series scheduled for the upcoming year.
Having served in various coaching roles with the national team in the past, Waqar will face new challenges in this broader role, including managing player schedules for international matches and T20 leagues.
