In the video, he said, “It is time to move forward in life, so I am retiring from international and domestic cricket. I won’t be able to play for India anymore, but instead of being sad about it, I am happy that I played for India for so long. I am grateful to my family, childhood coaches, fellow players, and all fans for my journey.”
Dhawan has played 269 international matches for India, scoring 24 centuries. He was last seen captaining Punjab Kings during IPL 2024.
Dhawan has been one of the great modern ODI batsmen. He is among the eight players in this format who have scored more than 5,000 runs at an average of over 40 and a strike rate of over 90. He last played for India during the Bangladesh tour in December 2022.
He made a spectacular entry into Test cricket by scoring a century off just 85 balls against Australia on his debut. This was the fastest century on Test debut by any player.
His best year was 2013 when he scored 1162 runs in ODIs with an average of 50.52 and a strike rate of 97.89. His five innings in the Champions Trophy where he scored 363 runs proved crucial for the Indian team. It was during the Champions Trophy that Rohit Sharma and Dhawan established themselves as India’s opening pair. Despite this, Dhawan continued to shine and became the leading run-scorer for India in major tournaments like Asia Cup 2014, ICC World Cup 2015, Champions Trophy 2017, and Asia Cup 2018.
Dhawan suffered a major setback in his ODI career during the 2019 World Cup when he had to exit the tournament due to a thumb injury. During this period, he also got the opportunity to lead the Indian team in the absence of regular players.
In the IPL, Dhawan has represented Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Punjab Kings. He is the second-highest run-scorer in the IPL after Virat Kohli. Dhawan has scored 6769 runs in 221 matches in the IPL with a strike rate of 127.14.
In domestic cricket, Dhawan represented Delhi. In the 2007-08 season, Delhi won the Ranji Trophy during his early days. Dhawan was the highest run-scorer for India in the Under-19 World Cup in 2004.
