Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has decided to retire from his 14-year international career, as announced in a social media post on Saturday morning. Dhawan, who last played in April while leading Punjab Kings in IPL 2024, leaves the game with an impressive record of 24 international centuries (17 in ODIs and seven in Tests) from 269 matches.
In a video shared on his social media accounts, Dhawan expressed his peace in retiring from both international and domestic cricket. He reflected on his time playing for India with gratitude, saying, “I played for the country, and that brings me happiness. It is time to move forward.”
Dhawan leaves behind a remarkable legacy in ODIs, standing among the elite group of batters with over 5000 runs at a 40-plus average and 90-plus strike rate. His last appearance for India was during the ODI series against Bangladesh in December 2022.
Though Dhawan excelled in all formats, it was in ODIs where he truly shined. His career took off in Tests with a memorable debut century against Australia, followed by a match-winning 187. However, his ODI performances, especially in 2013, stood out with 1162 runs at an average of 50.52 and a strike rate of 97.89, including a stellar showing in India’s Champions Trophy victory.
The dynamic opening partnership between Dhawan and Rohit Sharma blossomed during this period, becoming one of the most successful in ODI history and second only to the iconic duo of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly for India.
