“Even if it’s challenging for you, put on a smile. That alone will surprise people,”
“As your teammate, I witnessed your hard work on the field,” Dravid expressed to Gambhir. “As your batting partner and fellow fielder, I saw your determination and refusal to give up. Throughout various IPL seasons, I observed your will to win, your mentorship to younger players, and your dedication to bring out the best in your team on the field.
“I know how committed and passionate you are about Indian cricket, and I am confident that you will bring these qualities into your new role.
“You will face high expectations and intense scrutiny, but remember that you will never be alone, even in tough times. You will have the support of your players, support staff, past leaders, management, and always remember who you play for – the demanding fans who will always stand behind the team.”
Shortly after winning the T20 World Cup final in Barbados last month, Dravid spoke about the element of “luck” that played a role in their victory and hoped the same luck would favor Gambhir as well.
“I also wish you a bit of luck, as we coaches need it to make us appear wiser and smarter than we actually are,” he joked.
Dravid’s dry humor aimed to bring a smile to Gambhir’s face. “Even if it’s hard for you, just smile. That alone will surprise people,” he stated.
“I don’t usually get emotional, but this message really touched me in a way that it normally wouldn’t. It’s a wonderful message,”
Gambhir’s reaction to Dravid’s message
“As one Indian cricket coach to another, one final piece of advice. In the most intense moments, take a step back and breathe. I wish you all the best, Gautam. I am confident you will lead the Indian team to greater heights.”
Reacting to Dravid’s emotional message, Gambhir expressed that there was much to learn from his predecessor, not just for him but for the entire generation.
“I don’t know how to react because this message means a lot to me,” Gambhir shared. “Not just because it’s from the person I am succeeding, but also from someone I have always looked up to during my playing days.
“I have always believed, and I have mentioned this in many interviews – he is the most selfless cricketer I have ever played with. Rahul bhai has done everything and anything that Indian cricket required.
“There is so much to learn from him, not only for me but for the upcoming and current generation as well. Indian cricket is more significant than individuals.
“I don’t typically get emotional, but this message really touched me in a way that it normally wouldn’t. It’s a fantastic message.
“I hope to fill the massive shoes that are ahead of me. I aim to do so with honesty, transparency, and hopefully make not just the nation proud but especially the person I have always admired – Rahul bhai,” he concluded.
