A recent survey conducted by the newly-rebranded World Cricketers Association (WCA), previously known as FICA, suggests that the T20 World Cup is gaining prominence as the most important ICC event among players worldwide. The survey, which gathers opinions from several hundred players globally, indicates a significant shift in preference towards the T20 World Cup, particularly among younger players.
In 2019, 85% of respondents considered the 50-over World Cup as the most significant ICC event, with only 15% choosing the T20 World Cup. However, by 2024, the numbers had changed, with 50% opting for the 50-over World Cup, 35% for the T20 World Cup, and 15% for the World Test Championship.
The survey results also reflect a noticeable change in preference among players under 26. In 2019, 86% favored the 50-over World Cup, compared to 14% for the T20 World Cup. By 2024, the numbers shifted to 49% for the 50-over World Cup, 41% for the T20 World Cup, and 10% for the World Test Championship.
Furthermore, the trend extends beyond ICC events, with a shift towards favoring T20 cricket over Test cricket. Five years ago, 82% of respondents considered Test cricket the most important format, while 11% chose T20. This year, only 48% chose Test cricket, with 30% opting for T20.
The WCA’s survey sample comprised approximately 330 professional players from 13 countries, predominantly current internationals. Despite a higher number of female respondents in 2024, the WCA assures that the trends remain consistent when focusing on male players’ responses.
While players from India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are not represented due to lack of unionization, respondents come from other major cricketing nations such as Australia, Bangladesh, England, New Zealand, South Africa, and the West Indies.
Tom Moffat, WCA’s chief executive, emphasized the importance of player involvement in discussions regarding the game’s structure and regulations. He highlighted the need for a coordinated approach to address scheduling conflicts between international cricket and domestic T20 leagues, suggesting that players’ input is essential in shaping the game’s future.
According to Moffat, the renegotiated players’ squad terms for future ICC events, covering commercial and image rights, aim to benefit players from smaller nations. The WCA reached this agreement shortly before the T20 World Cup, following extensive negotiations.
