Following significant changes, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has introduced a new selection committee structure, sources revealed to Geo News. According to the sources, the selection committee will now consist of coaches from both white-ball and red-ball formats, as well as the captain of the respective format. Former cricketers Mohammad Yousuf and Asad Shafiq will also be part of the committee. This decision by PCB comes in the wake of the Babar Azam-led team’s disappointing exit from the group stage of the T20 World Cup.
The poor performance of the Pakistan team has prompted PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi to make changes in the team management. On Wednesday, PCB officially announced that Abdul Razzaq and Wahab Riaz will no longer be a part of the national selection committee. Razzaq was a member of both men’s and women’s selection committees, while Wahab served as a selector for the men’s team. Due to disciplinary issues, Wahab was also relieved of his role as senior team manager, along with team manager Rana Mansoor.
Over the past four years, PCB has seen a revolving door of selectors, with Wahab, Mohammad Wasim, Shahid Afridi, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Haroon Rashid, and Misbah-ul-Haq all having brief tenures. Sources have indicated that Wahab and Mansoor were involved in favoritism towards certain players, who ultimately failed to perform. Other members of the selection committee opposed the inclusion of these players.
After his removal from the committee, Wahab posted on social media, stating, “There is a lot I can say, but I don’t want to be part of the blame games.” He also shared a letter affirming his commitment to serving Pakistani cricket with dedication and sincerity.
