The decision has been made by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to move the second Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh from Karachi to Rawalpindi. This shift is due to the ongoing construction work at the Karachi National Stadium in preparation for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy next year. Originally, the series schedule had the first Test slated for August 21 in Rawalpindi and the second Test scheduled for August 30 to September 3 in Karachi. PCB had decided to prohibit spectators from attending the second Test in Karachi due to the renovations taking place at the National Stadium for the Champions Trophy.
Construction experts have advised PCB that the construction could continue while the matches are being played. However, the noise and dust generated by the construction could potentially distract and disrupt the players. “Due to heavy construction equipment deployment and strict redevelopment timelines for the National Bank Stadium to prepare for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, PCB, in collaboration with the Bangladesh Cricket Board, has chosen to relocate the second ICC World Test Championship match to Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium,” stated PCB.
The construction work at the Karachi venue could impact the health and well-being of players, officials, broadcasters, and media personnel. With the operational readiness of the venue for the ICC Champions Trophy as a top priority, PCB has decided to host both Tests in Rawalpindi after consulting all stakeholders and assessing operational and logistical considerations.
Karachi is also expected to host the second Test match between Pakistan and England from October 15 to 19. PCB will continue to collaborate with architects and construction experts to ensure the safe hosting of the October Test match in Karachi, while keeping the England and Wales Cricket Board informed.
