Punjab Kings, an Indian Premier League franchise, is reportedly not planning to extend the contract of head coach Trevor Bayliss. Bayliss, an Australian cricket coach, took over from Anil Kumble at PBKS before the start of the 2023 IPL season. The report suggests that Bayliss’ two-year contract with the team has come to an end, and the franchise is looking for a new Indian coach. If this information is accurate, Bayliss would be the second Australian coach to be replaced this month, following Ricky Ponting.
In recent times, Indian coaches and mentors in the IPL have delivered positive results for various teams. According to a report on Cricbuzz, PBKS is actively searching for an Indian coach, with Sanjay Bangar being among the potential candidates.
Aside from coaching PBKS, Bayliss has previously coached teams like Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad. The team’s finishes in the IPL standings over the past two seasons (eighth and ninth) are believed to have contributed to his potential departure. While the owners had no issues with Bayliss’ coaching style, the team’s performance results have led to this decision.
Just a week ago, Delhi Capitals announced the departure of head coach Ricky Ponting after seven years without an IPL title. The franchise hinted at the possibility of team director Sourav Ganguly taking on the additional role of head coach next season.
“As you step down as our head coach, we find it hard to express in words. The values you instilled in us during our time together – care, commitment, attitude, and effort – define our seven years,” DC shared on their official ‘X’ handle.
