Senior speedster Mohammed Shami, who is undergoing rehabilitation after an ankle surgery, is expected to return to competitive cricket for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and may play an upcoming Test match against New Zealand. Shami is likely to feature in one of Bengal’s opening matches against UP on October 11 or Bihar on October 18. The New Zealand Test series begins on October 19 in Bengaluru, followed by matches in Pune (October 24) and Mumbai (Nov 1). Shami is anticipated to participate in one of these matches before heading to Australia for an important tour.
Shami, a key component of India’s fast bowling attack, last played for India during the ODI World Cup final in November last year. He underwent ankle surgery in February and has been recovering since then. Although there were speculations about his participation in the Duleep Trophy, it has been confirmed that he will not be rushed back into action before he is fully fit.
The top priority for the selectors is to have the trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj fit for the Test series in Australia. Shami has an impressive record in Test cricket with 229 wickets from 64 matches, including six five-wicket hauls and 12 four-wicket hauls.
