Trott is currently the head coach of Afghanistan, a role he has held since 2022, with his contract extended until the end of 2024 in January. However, there is uncertainty regarding his future as the 43-year-old considers whether to continue. The SA20 is scheduled for January 2025, and there is no conflict with his international duties. It remains to be seen if Trott will renew his contract set to expire in December.
Trott has achieved success during his time with Afghanistan, overseeing significant improvements in their performance at global competitions. Previously struggling in ICC tournaments, they have now secured victories against top teams like Australia, England, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Bangladesh in the past nine months across the 2023 ODI and 2024 T20I World Cups. Despite reaching the semifinals in the latter, they were defeated by South Africa.
Trott may be considered for the limited-overs coaching role for England, although he is seen as a less likely candidate compared to the current head coach Matthew Mott. With 127 international caps for England, Trott has previous coaching experience with the Under-19 and Lions teams.
