If similar costs for uncapped players retained before the 2025 auction are set by the IPL, CSK is reportedly interested in retaining Dhoni through that route. However, other franchises are not in favor of granting uncapped status to long-retired international players.
Sunrisers Hyderabad owner Kavya Maran expressed concerns about retaining retired players as uncapped, stating that it could be seen as disrespectful and undervalue the player who could potentially earn more at the auction. She suggested that retired players should be part of the auction where their value is determined by the market.
At the meeting, a franchise head mentioned that many teams believed former international players should not be considered uncapped regardless of how long they have been retired.
Retired India players could be allowed to lower base price
The franchises unanimously agreed that Indian players who had not played international cricket for five years should be allowed to lower their base price at the auction. This suggestion came from IPL chief operating officer Hemang Amin, who believed that a lower base price would increase the chances of these players being bought at the auction.
A franchise head noted that capped Indian players without recent international experience were struggling to attract bids at high base prices, often going unsold despite multiple attempts.
