Rahane, 36, had initially planned to join Leicestershire last year but got called back to the Indian Test team for the World Test Championship final. Subsequently, he also took part in the Test series against the West Indies and was unable to play for the county in 2023.
“We are delighted to have someone of Ajinkya’s caliber joining Leicestershire,” said Claude Henderson, the director of cricket at Leicestershire. “Although his schedule didn’t align with ours last year, we are thrilled to secure his services for the upcoming season.”
“With his vast experience, leadership qualities, and ability to score runs, Ajinkya will be a valuable asset to the team. His presence will also provide an excellent learning opportunity for our batters,” Henderson added.
Rahane played in the Tests against the West Indies in July last year but has not played since. With over 13,000 runs in first-class cricket at an average of 45.76, and 6475 runs in List A at 39.72, Rahane brings a wealth of experience to the team.
His arrival in mid-July will coincide with the expected departure of South Africa’s allrounder Wiaan Mulder for international duties. Rahane’s presence will bolster Leicestershire’s defense of the One-Day Cup, which they won last September.
Rahane expressed his excitement about returning to Leicestershire, stating, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play for Leicestershire once again. I have a strong relationship with Claude and Alfonso, and I am eager to contribute to the club’s success this season.”
