India has decided to rely on a familiar and experienced core group in order to defend their Women’s Asia Cup championship. The team comprises players who have all been part of the 17-member squad for the ongoing T20I series against South Africa, with Amanjot Kaur and Shabnam Shakil being the only notable omissions.
As India gears up to travel to Sri Lanka for the tournament, they have selected Shweta Sehrawat, Saika Ishaque, Tanuja Kanwar, and Meghna Singh as travelling reserves. Sri Lanka, the team they defeated in the 2022 final, will be hosting this edition of the competition.
India’s campaign in the Asia Cup will kick off against Pakistan on July 19. They will also face UAE and Nepal in the group stage as they aim to progress to the knockout rounds. All 15 matches of the tournament, including the semi-finals and final, will be held in Dambulla.
Currently engaged in a multi-format series against South Africa, India finds themselves trailing 0-1 in the T20I series, having previously swept the ODI series 3-0 and emerged victorious in the one-off Test match. The Asia Cup will serve as valuable preparation ahead of the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh scheduled for September and October.
