Addressing speculation of factionalism within the Pakistan team, former captain Shahid Afridi criticized the new generation of social media fans, whom he referred to as being “born during Covid times”. Following Pakistan’s disappointing early exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup, reports suggesting division in the dressing room into three groups began circulating. Afridi, however, dismissed these claims, attributing the team’s struggles to poor performances and inadequate leadership, particularly criticizing Babar Azam’s captaincy.
In an appearance on Samaa TV, Afridi stated, “No factions have existed within the team before. Why are they surfacing now?” He emphasized that the emergence of groups indicates weak leadership and is a consequence of poor performances.
Afridi also pointed fingers at social media fans for believing and spreading rumors about internal divisions, stating, “This generation, born during the Covid era, lacks understanding of cricket and easily falls for such narratives.”
Criticism from Pakistan cricket legends such as Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar has further highlighted the team’s shortcomings, particularly targeting Babar Azam’s batting and leadership.
Pakistan will face Ireland in their final Group A match, with hopes of salvaging some pride in what has been a challenging campaign.
