The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially declined the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) proposal to host the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup in October, as confirmed by BCCI secretary Jay Shah. The final decision is expected to be made by the ICC on August 20.
India’s decision not to host the tournament, scheduled for October 3-20, has left Sri Lanka and the UAE as potential alternative venues for the event.
Shah stated, “They [ICC] have inquired if we would host the World Cup. I have clearly refused. We are currently in the monsoon season, and we are also set to host the Women’s ODI World Cup next year. I do not wish to indicate that we are willing to host consecutive World Cups.”
The ICC is contemplating a venue change due to recent unrest in Bangladesh, which has led to security concerns and instability following anti-government protests. The situation is being closely monitored by the ICC in collaboration with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and security consultants to prioritize the safety of all participants.
Amidst security challenges and the crisis within the BCB, the Bangladesh men’s Test team is currently on tour in Pakistan. Shah mentioned that there has been no communication with the Bangladeshi authorities, but he acknowledged the importance of the upcoming series between India and Bangladesh.
In other news, VVS Laxman’s tenure as the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) will be extended, as confirmed by Shah. Laxman’s current contract is set to expire in September, but he will continue in his role at the NCA.
