The experienced pair of Rumana Ahmed and Jahanara Alam have made a comeback to the Bangladesh squad for the Women’s Asia Cup, after being out for more than a year. Despite having played over 130 internationals each, the selectors had previously opted for a younger squad. However, recent losses to Australia and India have prompted a rethink.
Jahanara was the leading wicket-taker in the Dhaka Premier Division Women’s Cricket League, while Rumana also performed well with the ball. Chief selector Sajjad Ahmed praised their fitness and performance in the league, stating that their experience will benefit the team.
In addition to Rumana and Jahanara, opener Ishma Tanjim and spinner Sabikun Nahar have also been called up to the squad. Ishma was lauded for her batting prowess, while Sabikun’s spin bowling skills were seen as a valuable asset.
Players like Habiba Islam, Fahima Khatun, Sobhana Mostary, and Fariha Trisna were left out from the previous squad. Sajjad expressed hope that the new squad can lead Bangladesh to the semi-finals of the Asia Cup.
The team will face Sri Lanka in their opening match on July 20, followed by games against Thailand and Malaysia on July 22 and 24. The squad for the tournament includes Nigar Sultana, Nahida Akter, Rumana Ahmed, Jahanara Alam, and other talented players.
